Good piece, Shannon, but intentionality is not endemic to the medium as much as it is to the mind of the artist. I’ve been doing this for more than sixty years. When I used 35mm film, I was told that my method resembled those who used large view cameras. It was not unusual for me to pick up reversal film from the lab, examine them them on the lightbox and toss out most or all of them, and start again. I adore the possibilities that digital work offers me, but I still have the habit of thinking things out and an economy of very deliberate exposures. As a devotee of surrealism, film always seemed short for what I was trying to do. But I love all forms of photography.
